Another first day of school post…

I have another daughter, in addition to the one I posted about yesterday, who will step into the classroom for her first day of school this week.

I didn’t buy her a new backpack.  She doesn’t have any Elmer’s glue or number two pencils.  There will be no bus pick-ups or drop-offs, no early dismissal for hot weather, no Trapper-Keepers.

She filled out all the forms herself, and some were very tedious like the FAFSA form.  She applied, provided transcripts, comparison-shopped, and enrolled.  She called me today just after buying her books and girlfriend was walking on sunshine, so excited to be going back to finish her degree.

This is my first born, Katie, and I’m so glad to see this day come.  See, Katie quit college before finishing her degree.  I didn’t want her to, but the truth is she was a bit of a slacker those four years she attended.  She lost her partial scholarship because of grades.  Her GPA sucked, she wasn’t pulling a full credit load most semesters, and her heart wasn’t in it.  After four full years, and in lieu of my begging and pleading, she quit and came home with just shy of 100 credit hours.

I zipped up my mouth and didn’t nag or even ask.  I simply waited.  And here we are - two years later.  She took it upon herself to pull everything together, put everything in order.

And tomorrow is her first day.  Katie is 24 and I’m as excited for her as I was on her first day of kindergarten.
