Because all the other mommy bloggers are doing it….

Evidently, an expected part of being a mommy and a blogger is providing occasional informative updates on the children via letters to them in the blog. Or, maybe it’s not ‘expected’ but I’m just a flipping lemming who cannot stop myself from following the herd.

In any case, who am I to fight the tide, right? So I’ll include these little updates on my daughters from time to time giving those of you who are interested a chance to keep up on the growth and progress of my progeny.

To My Dearest Firstborn,

Oh! How quickly time passes. It seems like just yesterday they flopped you onto my stomach and I was like, all, “Ewwww, get this gross slimy thing off me.” But we made it past that and so much has transpired since!

You are now 22 years old. While we know you can sit up and roll over, you prefer to lay flat on your back, or sometimes on your side (depending on where the pretty TV is) as much as possible. You sure love your bottle! I had hoped you would give it up by now, and for a few years it looked as if you had, but then college intervened and you were right back on it.

You laugh easily and often, which is a source of joy to me. But goodness, the whining must come to an end. These Terrible-22s just seem to go on FOREVER! I know we’ll both laugh about it some day. One thing that never ceases to amaze me - it’s just frightening how much laundry one human being can generate, isn’t it? And it seems as if you’re always eating or sleeping. That’s pretty much your whole day - eating, sleeping, playing, making a mess. Repeat, repeat, repeat. A mother’s work is just never done.

You’re so funny - but when we get the camera out, you immediately stop doing your silly thing as if you just don’t want us to capture it and embarrass you with it later. It’s so cute! Another thing that causes us to shake our heads and smile is your need for positive attention. Yes, I know it’s very typical of the age, but it’s still rather endearing. Every time you do something you know we’ll be proud of, you just beam and wait for us to clap and tell you what a good girl you are. It’s adorable. I’m proud to say that you go in the potty almost EVERY time now, and even when you might have a wee accident, you always take care of it yourself so it’s not even an issue for me.

You love your sisters very much, but sometimes we have to remind you to be nice and to share. My only complaint would be the way you act when we take you to stores with us… can I have this, buy me that. Really, we’ll be glad once you mature enough to learn that you can’t have everything you want and you must work for those things that matter.

Dearest Katie, you know we have lofty dreams for you. We hope you will someday grow up and go back to college to earn a degree! You can be whatever you want if only you put your heart and mind into it!

Love,
Mom

(p.s. I took a teeny tiny wee bit of creative license, as the child really is no longer living here, but it’s a mother’s prerogative to complain about her children long after they’ve gone, right??? And if she would ever read this, she would Nail Me To The Wall over the laundry comment because it almost sort of kind of seems to imply that I do her laundry and the truth is that I haven’t done her laundry in a DECADE so I just feel the need to confess that one straight away.)
