Maybe They Had it Right All Along…
A couple of years ago, I read a book called The Red Tent by Anita Diamant. The book is set in biblical times. You know, back in those days where women were second class citizens. Before women were empowered. Before we fought the good fight for equality. Before we were as SMART as we are now.
This week (and coincidentally, again next week) I’m in New York doing my corporate drone thing and I’m so fucking equal that I can hardly stand it. I’m so equal that my feet are killing me and I’m tired. I’m so equal that I missed my toddler’s first day at her new pre-school. I’m so equal that I’ve allowed myself to become someone that I sometimes can’t recognize. That’s how equal I am.
Those Red Tent ladies might have been smarter than all of us. Get this – they didn’t have to go to New York EVER. They didn’t have to dress all professional in a way that made them feel uncomfortable. They didn’t have to smile and utter phrases like “key performance indicators” or “broad-based application” or “top line revenue growth” or “core competency”. They didn’t even care if their thinking was outside of the box or not.
But the BEST thing – get this, those women were BRILLIANT. They somehow convinced the male folk that they were contaminated during their monthly cycles. The men wanted nothing to do with them. These women got a week out of every month OFF. They went to the red tent and hung out with other chicks bitching about husbands and housework and such.
We blew it, ladies. We had a sweet deal…
